What Makes it a City Bike, Exactly?
Danish bikes and Dutch Bikes share a similar geometry - putting the rider comfortably in an upright position for riding. If the bike is properly sized for the rider, there is little to no strain on your back, your arms drape nearly like in an arm chair, and you should feel little to no fatigue in your legs even after riding distances. The bikes are long, and heavy compared to the 10 speed we all rode in the 80's. Likewise, where you perched on top of that 10 speed, you sit in a dutch bike.
As for English city bikes, they're generally smaller (using 26" instead of 28" wheels) and they often have curvier handlebars as well.
Now, and then as you know, a City Bike by design is to be used as transportation. To that end, it not only has an upright sitting position (the better to see traffic with, my sweet) it comes with internal gearing which requires little to no maintenance (just please don't pedal while you're shifting). That allows the chain to be fully enclosed which means no grease on you. Add fenders to keep the rooster tail of dirty rainwater off your back, Great lights and drum brakes that stop in all weather conditions. A comfortable seat - quality leather conforms to Your bottom like a fine pair of shoes. And carrying capacity - be it a front or rear, rack or basket - in which to put a loaf of bread, a quart of milk and a stick of butter. Oh, and a kick stand.
